DARPA Neural networks engaged again - DARPA, Agency, Research, SyNAPSE, Projects, Advanced - To be or not to be?

After a decade, the Agency for Defense Advanced Research Projects United States (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, DARPA) in the past year, reanimated of artificial systems capable of automatically examine the relevant attributes and associations for recognition of objects, just as happens in the human brain. Part of this ambition DARPA was the conclusion of the contract with IBM and held at last week’s funding in the amount of $ 16.1 million for program SyNAPSE (system neyromorfnoy adaptive scalable plastic electronics, Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics). In the announcement of the Agency has identified its goal – «break the paradigm of programmable automation and define a new path for the creation of useful, intelligent machines».
Modern system of recognition, such as enemy tanks on the set templates based on algorithms developed by experts. In contrast, the SyNAPSE to create schemes that are able to determine patterns in the course of learning, imitating the work of the human brain. From this perspective, a priority of researchers will be the development of artificial analogues of synapses – the elements of the nervous system, capable of creating adaptive connections between neurons, in accordance with the received images. It is anticipated that the modifiable synapses of the state of these compounds may offer an alternative to traditional programming to examine patterns of imagery.
Prior to IBM the task of developing materials that can adaptively change in accordance with the new templates and to provide features to recognize images, as well as the construction of the interface with traditional computers, to enable the use of neyromorfnyh schemes as advanced module recognition. In addition to obtaining functional synapses, the program involves the development of circuits that can simulate synaptic components in the nuclei of special-purpose, supporting the adaptive architecture of the trainees needed for automatic pattern recognition.
If successful, the program is planned to continue funding for the development of hardware neyromorfnyh systems, development tools and large-scale simulations, which must confirm the possibility of scaling systems on the basis of the synapses to levels close to the characteristics of the human brain. In addition to IBM, DARPA attracted to work on neural networks HRL Laboratories and Hewlett Packard.
